Why do our ears 'pop' in an airplane?

The low air pressure in an airplane causes an irregularity in the pressure in the inner ear. The pressure can be relieved through yawning, swallowing, or chewing gum, which opens the muscles of an auditory tube, that connects the ears to the nose and throat. During pressure equalisation, the air in the tube makes the 'pop' sound, reducing the discomfort.
