Why do people shrink as they age?

People tend to get shorter as they age due to changes in the bones, muscles and joints, typically losing half-inch every 10 years after turning 40 years old, according to MedlinePlus. This height loss can be caused due to several reasons, including the shortening of spaces between vertebrae, muscle loss, the tendency of feet to flatten with age, etc.
