Sometimes people smell things that aren't actually present due to a condition called phantosmia. It happens when smell-processing nerves send false signals to the brain. Its causes include sinus infections, migraines, head injuries, neurological disorders, COVID-19 after-effects or certain medications. Phantom smells may seem like smoke, burning, chemicals, or rotten food.
