Why do planes dump fuel mid-air for emergency landings?

During emergency landings, pilots can choose to dump fuel mid-air to reduce the aircraft's weight quickly. This is done because maximum landing weight of a plane is typically lower than its takeoff weight as landing puts more stress on the plane. Notably, over 100 flights received hoax bomb threats in a week, which in some cases led to emergency landings.
