Why do safety pins have holes?

The hole in a safety pin has a spring mechanism, allowing the coiled wire to store tension, making the pin snap shut securely and preventing it from opening accidentally. Safety pin is made from a single length of wire and the loop enables uniform shape to the wire end without the addition of a sharp end that can catch fabric.
