Why do snakes shed their skin?

Snakes shed their old skin through a process known as ecdysis. As snakes grow, their skin doesn't expand; instead, they develop a new layer beneath the old one. When time is right, outer skin is shed, revealing a fresh, larger layer underneath. The entire process can take from a few minutes to several hours, depending on snake’s size and species.
