Why do some planes leave a trail in the sky?

The phenomenon of planes leaving trails in the sky is referred to as a contrail. The 'human-induced' clouds are formed when hot air from the jet exhaust mixes with low vapour pressure in cold temperatures, condensing into white ice crystals. The duration for which a contrail is visible usually depends on the humidity level.
