Why do STENTS fail after angioplasty?

In-stent restenosis is a blockage or narrowing that comes back in the portion of the coronary artery previously treated with a stent. Up to 5% of patients who receive a cardiac stent may develop in-stent restenosis. People who continue to smoke, have poorly controlled diabetes, kidney disease or high cholesterol are at high risk of these blockages in stent.
