Why do we close our eyes when we sneeze?

According to a theory, eyelids involuntarily shut during a sneeze to prevent the germs from entering and aggravating the eyes. Another theory suggests that muscle contractions induced by sneezing result in reflexive closing of the eyes. These muscle movements also cause some people to shed tears while sneezing.
