Why do we get songs stuck in our heads?

A song getting stuck in the head is often referred to as an earworm, and is caused when the auditory cortex in the brain is triggered. According to a study, a person's auditory cortex automatically fills the words of a familiar song, and the brains keep "singing" even after the song is over.
