Why does a tsunami wave become so tall near the shore?
short by / on Thursday, 16 July, 2026
Tsunami waves have a low amplitude in the mid-ocean. However, when they reach the shore, their amplitude increases significantly through a phenomenon called wave shoaling. The wave's speed decreases as the water becomes shallower. Since the frequency remains constant, the wavelength decreases. To conserve overall energy, the wave increases in height.
