Nearly 40% of Assam is flood-prone as it lies in the floodplain of the Brahmaputra, one of the world's highest sediment-carrying rivers. Silt deposits reduce the river's capacity to hold water, making overflows driven by heavy monsoon rain an annual occurrence. Deforestation and climate change also contribute. At least 10 people have already died in the state during this monsoon.
