Pakistan's southwestern province Balochistan has been demanding independence ever since its accession in 1948. Baloch nationalist groups reject the accession and regard it as an illegal military occupation by Pakistan. Balochs argue that their vast natural resources are being exploited to benefit other provinces. Baloch activists also face severe human rights abuses by Pakistani authorities.
