Why does February usually have only 28 days?

When a 12-month calendar was introduced in the Roman empire, months with even number of days were avoided, as even numbers were considered unlucky. As per calculation, while most months had 29 or 31 days, one month needed to have an even number of days, for which February was chosen. Later, despite changes to the calendar, the 28-day-long February stuck.
