A military source in Ukraine said that the ‘Z’ marking along with other symbols are painted on Russian military vehicles so that they aren't confused with Ukrainian vehicles and the risk of friendly fire is reduced. Military experts also believe the symbols are likely to be connected to the geographic location of where the units would be deployed for combat.
