Why don't airplanes fly in a straight line?

Airplanes don't fly in a straight line due to the Earth's shape, which is an oblate spheroid. Due to this spherical shape, the shortest distance between two points on the Earth isn't a straight line, but rather an arc known as the Great Circle route. The curved appearance of the flight path can also be attributed to map projections.
