Why has Iran removed 4 zeros from its currency?

Iran has removed four zeros from its currency rial as inflation rates exceeding 35% annually have significantly devalued it, causing the exchange rate to plummet sharply against the dollar on the free market. On Sunday, the rial was trading at about 1,115,000 against the US dollar. Under the plan, 10,000 current rials will be replaced by one new rial.
