Why Indian Railways wants to test galvanised steel rails

Indian Railways plans to experiment with galvanised steel rails in coastal and high-humidity areas to curb corrosion and extend track life from three years to over 12 years. Galvanised rails cost about ₹84,000 per tonne, around 10% more than normal steel. At present, Railways use nickel-chromium-copper grade steel rails. The move could reportedly save Railways billions in annual renewal costs.
