Why is Feb 21 celebrated as Int'l Mother Language Day?

February 21 has been celebrated as International Mother Language Day since 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity. The date was chosen by UNESCO to recognise the Bengali Language Movement in erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). During the movement, students demonstrating for recognition of Bengali as a national language, along with Urdu, were shot by police on February 21, 1952.
