Why is France shutting down its nuclear reactors amid heatwave?
short by Ankit Tiwari / on Tuesday, 14 July, 2026
France shut down three nuclear reactors as heatwaves pushed temperatures above 40°C, leaving nearby rivers already too warm to absorb the hot water discharged by the plants. Under French rules, reactors cannot discharge water if it raises river temperatures beyond set limits. Warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen, which can harm fish, trigger toxic algae growth, and damage river ecosystems.
