Hawaii is releasing millions of mosquitoes from helicopters in order to save rare birds, which have very little immune response to avian malaria, from slipping into extinction. Male mosquitoes are released with a bacteria that stops eggs of females they mate with from hatching. Since female mosquitoes only mate once, the move aims to reduce overall mosquito population over time.
