Why is January 15 celebrated as Army Day?

On January 15, 1949, Lieutenant General KM Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, replacing General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India. On this day, tributes are paid to the martyred soldiers at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, followed by military shows featuring the achievements of the Army.
