Why is May 1 observed as Labour Day?

May 1 is observed as International Labour Day to acknowledge contributions of working class and raise awareness about workers' rights. It commemorates 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, where workers striking for an eight-hour workday were killed after a bomb exploded at a rally. In 1889, Second International, a global alliance of socialist and labour parties, declared it annual workers' holiday.
