New Year's Day was celebrated on January 1 for the first time ever in 45 BC when Julian calendar took effect. It was in part to honour Janus, who is the Roman god of beginnings and endings. Today’s Gregorian calendar, which was introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII to correct some inaccuracies, continues to start the year in January.
