Why is pink linked to girls, blue associated with boys?

Before World War II, blue was linked to girls as it was considered to be "delicate and dainty", and pink was associated with boys as it was believed to be a "decided and stronger colour". According to a theory, post the war, women who grew up deprived of pink, wanted their daughters to wear pink. Further, advertisers marketed the norm.
