Why is pound abbreviated as 'lb'?
short by Sanira Mediratta / on Sunday, 29 January, 2017
Pound, which is used as a measure of weight, comes from the term 'pound weight', which is traced back to the Roman unit 'libra pondo'. A shortened version of the unit, Libra, meaning weight and balance scales, later began to be used. Libra was thus abbreviated to 'lb', and was adopted as the abbreviation to pound.
