US' E-3 Sentry plane, which was destroyed by Iran at a Saudi Arabian air base, is one of the most widely used AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft in existence. Fighter pilots rely on the battlespace picture provided by AWACS, said Kelly Grieco, a defense policy expert. Losing E-3 could create gaps in Air Force’s battlespace awareness and management.
