Why is the Moon moving slightly away from Earth each year?
short by Swati Dubey / on Tuesday, 16 September, 2025
Tidal forces are causing the moon to drift 3.8 cm from Earth annually. Earth's oceans bulge as a result of the Moon's gravity. As Earth rotates faster than Moon orbits, these bulges are positioned slightly ahead of the Moon. The Moon gains energy from their forward pull, which accelerates it and causes it to expand its orbit, gradually extending distance.
