Thousands of jet-like spicules on the Sun's surface look like spinning tornadoes, but new 3D simulations from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and the University of Sheffield show it's an optical illusion. What appear as isolated rotating straws are actually overlapping folds within the giant, undulating sheets of hot plasma rippling through the chromosphere.
