The standoff between trustees at Tata Trusts stems from the body's authority to appoint independent directors on board of Tata Sons, in which it owns a 66% stake. It began when ex-Defence Secretary Vijay Singh was due to be reappointed as a director. Trustee Mehli Mistry's camp attempted to block the reappointment and instead appoint Mistry to the board.
