Why is today's Moon called Wolf Supermoon?

The first full Moon of the year, known as the Wolf Supermoon, will light up the night sky today. The name 'Wolf Moon' has roots in indigenous, Celtic and Old English traditions, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. It refers to the howling of hungry wolves during harsh midwinter nights. It is also called the Old Moon or Ice Moon.
