Why is tonight's supermoon called the 'Sturgeon Moon'?
short by Daisy Mowke / on Tuesday, 1 August, 2023
The supermoon which will rise on August 1 is called the 'Sturgeon Moon', according to Farmer's Almanac. The Algonquin tribes in what is now northeastern United States called this the Sturgeon Moon after the large fish that were more easily caught this time of year in the Great Lakes and other water bodies. It's also called the Green Corn Moon.
