Venus is hotter than Mercury despite being farther from the Sun because it has a thick atmosphere made up of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, which trap the heat coming from the Sun, warming up the atmosphere. Notably, it's the hottest planet in the solar system. Mercury doesn't have an atmosphere, so there is nothing to trap heat there.
