World Asteroid Day is celebrated on June 30 to commemorate the anniversary of the 1908 Tunguska event, when a massive asteroid exploded over Russia's Siberia, destroying 2,000 square kilometers of forest. The impact released energy equivalent to around 185 Hiroshima bombs. The United Nations formally adopted a resolution in December 2016, declaring June 30 as International Asteroid Day.
