Elephants show empathy towards each other and have shown self-awareness in multiple studies conducted on their behaviour. World Elephant Day is celebrated on August 12 every year to raise awareness about conservation of elephants. The purpose is to draw attention to threats faced by elephants across the world such as habitat loss, poaching, human-wildlife conflict, and mistreatment in captivity.
