World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5 to raise awareness about environmental protection and encourage sustainable action. Established by the UN in 1972 and first celebrated in 1973, the day is led by UNEP. According to the UN, the day mobilises governments, organisations and citizens worldwide to tackle challenges such as pollution, climate change and biodiversity loss.
