Why is World Laughter Day celebrated?

World Laughter Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May and falls on May 5 this year. It's an annual event observed to highlight the notable healing benefits of laughter. It originated due to efforts of an Indian doctor, Dr Madan Kataria, who was inspired by the facial feedback hypothesis which shows a link between facial expressions and emotions.
