Why is yawning contagious?
short by Swati Dubey / on Monday, 17 November, 2025
Yawning spreads quickly from one person to another, making it a common shared reflex because our brains are wired to mirror actions we see. Scientists link this effect to empathy and mirror neurons, which fire when we observe someone yawn, prompting us to do same. This response becomes stronger around familiar faces, making shared yawns more common among close companions.
