Why otter sighting means rivers are healthy?

The sighting of smooth-coated otters in Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary confirms that its rivers and streams are clean and rich in fish. Otters survive only in unpolluted freshwater systems, making them powerful bio-indicators. Their presence shows that habitat protection, strict monitoring and anti-pollution measures by forest dept are working effectively in Uttarakhand's Terai-Bhabar landscape.
