Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991 and has its own government and currency. Somaliland remained unrecognised as most countries and international organisations follow the rule that borders set at independence should not be changed without agreement. Somalia has always rejected Somaliland's independence. Notably, Israel has become first country to recognise Somaliland as sovereign state.
