The cerebral tissue lacks nociceptors, specialised sensory neurons that signal noxious stimuli, meaning the brain itself cannot directly register pain. Dr Joy emphasises that pain perception arises from nociceptive input from peripheral tissues, meninges and vasculature to central pain networks, with cortical interpretation producing the conscious experience of pain.
