Why the Environment Protection Act of 1986 matters

India enacted the Environment Protection Act in 1986 after the Bhopal gas tragedy to give the Central Government wide powers to protect and improve the environment. The Act authorises the Centre to set air, water and soil standards, regulate hazardous substances, and restrict industrial activities through rules and notifications.
