Urban Company co-founder, Varun Khaitan told Raj Shamani that they earlier named their company UrbanClap as their target customers were urban people, and clap defined how kings would order services with a clap. He further added that they later changed the name as the word 'clap' is used as a slang for a sexually transmitted disease (STD) in western countries.
