Why was 'breast tax' imposed on Kerala women 300 years ago?

About 300 years ago in Kerala, women belonging to backward castes had to pay a tax if they wanted to cover their breasts. The tax was imposed because standing bare chested was taken as a sign of respect towards the upper castes. To defy the law, one woman is known to have cut off her breasts.
