Why was Iran President Ebrahim Raisi called 'The Butcher of Tehran'?

Iran President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash aged 63, was known as 'The Butcher of Tehran' for his role on the 'death committee' during the 1988 executions of around 5,000 political prisoners. Raisi was deputy prosecutor of the Revolutionary Court during the time. The political dissidents were allegedly subjected to enforced disappearance in Iranian prisons and executed.
