Why were England given 5 runs when Kohli's throw hit helmet?

England were awarded five extra runs during the Chennai Test against India on Friday, when Virat Kohli's throw hit the keeper's helmet, placed on the field. As per laws, five penalty runs are awarded to the batting side if the ball strikes a fielder's helmet while in play, with the delivery not being counted as part of the over.
