WII develops genetic barcode to identify rhesus macaques

Researchers at the Wildlife Institute of India created a non-invasive genetic barcode to identify rhesus macaques. Using hair and fecal samples, the high-precision mitochondrial markers distinguish macaques from other species with up to 93% accuracy. This low-cost tool helps conservationists monitor wild populations and manage human-wildlife conflicts without disturbing the animals.
