Window Tax: Pay more tax for more windows in France until 1926

This peculiar tax system in Europe survived centuries. It was based on number of windows a house had. More windows meant larger house and more prosperity, hence higher taxes. To circumvent this, people built large houses with few windows, many sealed them off, and some camouflaged them with paint. It was eventually abolished, France being the last in 1926.
