Witness contradictions must be proved before courts rely on them

Advocate Deepak Somani said a witness contradicting an earlier police statement does not automatically strengthen a criminal defence. Under Section 181 of BNSS, contradiction must be duly proved before it can be relied upon. The witness must first be confronted with the statement, while the Investigating Officer must later prove what was recorded for the contradiction to have evidentiary value.
