The 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday is the sixth-strongest earthquake in history, according to the US Geological Survey. It is the strongest earthquake recorded since 2011. Notably, the fifth-strongest earthquake (9.0-magnitude) also hit Kamchatka in 1952. The most powerful earthquake was recorded in Chile's Biobío in 1960, with a magnitude of 9.5.

Never-seen-before blood group found in Indian woman

A blood group never reported before has been discovered in a 38-year-old woman from Kolar, Karnataka. The woman, who said her blood group was O+, was admitted for surgery when her blood was found incompatible with available units. Tests revealed she has a never-before-described blood group antigen in Cromer system, which has been named CRIB, representing Cromer, India and Bengaluru.

Tsunami waves hit Japan hours after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka coast. Around 1-foot-high waves struck Hokkaido. The Japan Meteorological Agency had ordered evacuations in coastal areas & warned that tsunami waves would strike repeatedly. Earlier, tsunami waves also hit Russia near the epicentre of the earthquake. Meanwhile, alerts have been issued for the US West Coast.

A tsunami with waves measuring around 10 to 13 feet struck parts of the Yelizovsky district in Russia’s Kamchatka region after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit the coast, officials said. A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Russia's Kamchatka coast on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey stated. The earthquake was shallow and strong enough to cause waves or tsunami, it added. A tsunami alert has been issued for Russia, Japan and Pacific islands. The Japan Weather Agency said it expects a 3.28-foot tsunami to reach coastal areas from 6.30 am (IST).
